Number of Shrines in Kita-ku described on this site (4)
According to The Association of Shintō Shrines there are 36 shrines registered with it in Kita-ku (Japanese). I have come up with a number of 77: the difference stems from the large number of secondary in-ground shrines which are not registered with the Association.
Of the 19 main shrines, only one (5.3%) is Inari, 15 of the 58 (25.9%) secondary shrines are Inari. Thus, of the total 77 shrines in Kita-ku 16 (20.8%) are Inari, somewhat lower than the 23% nationwide figure implied in Kamata’s table. Hachiman Jinja account for 4 (21.1%) of the 19 main shrines, just 1 (1.7%) of the 58 secondary shrines, and 5 (6.5%) of the total. Kamata’s table implies 18.1%.
