How Many Shrines in Kyoto-fu?

The Association of Shinto Shrine (ASS), is a national organization overseeing about 80,000 shrines in Japan with branches in every prefecture. Its home page, lists the shrines registered with it by region. Adding up the number of shrines shown as being registered with it in Kyoto-fu’s 26 municipalities gives a number of 2,146. However, looking at each municipality separately and totaling the results gives a much lower number of 1,671.

The reason is that the ASS sometimes lists the shrine and shrine office separately, sometimes gives two slightly different addresses for the same shrine and lists them separately. Occasionally there are duplicate entries for one shrine. The table below shows the numbers. The “rodsshinto” column shows the number of shrines in my database.
