How Many Shrines in Kyoto-shi?

The Association of Shinto Shrine (ASS), a national organization overseeing about 80,000 shrines in Japan with branches in every prefecture. Its home page, jinja.in, lists the shrines registered with it by region and its  Kyoto page gives a number of 719 for shrines registered with in Kyoto-shi. There are 11 wards (ku) in Kyoto-shi. However, the number of shrines shown for each of the 11 wards adds up to just 358, The reason is that ​the ASS sometimes lists the shrine and shrine office separately, sometimes gives two slightly different addresses for the same shrine and lists them separately. Occasionally there are duplicate entries for one shrine. The table below shows the numbers. The “adj. for duplicates” column in the table shows an actual number of 297 for shrines registered with the ASS in Kyoto-shi, 17% lower than the ASS’s stated 358.
