Annual Festival: 2nd Sunday of April
As this is a subsidiary of Wakamiya Hachiman-Gu there is little information available on it; there is, however, ample information available on its festival, the Kanamara Matsuri (かなまら祭, "Festival of the Steel Phallus.") The shrine itself is just one building, but a rather unusual one. It is a roughly 8 metres high hexagonal structure with each side about 3 metres wide. The whole structure is plated in iron, and this symbolically links it to its two main Kami, Kanayama-hiko-no-Kami, the god of mines and blacksmiths, and Kanayama-hime-no-Kami, the goddess of mines.
The two Kami were born from the vomit of Izanami-no-Mikoto as she lay dying after her vagina had been fatally burned while giving birth to Hi-no-Yagihayao-Kami, the Kami of fire. This is interpreted as symbolising the expulsion of impurities in the iron refining process, Among other things, the Kami are prayed to for safe childbirth, marital harmony, and protection against sexually transmitted diseases.
The three photos at the top were taken my me when I visited the jinja. As I have not participated in the festival the four photos at the bottom were downloaded from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanamara_Matsuri
The following descriptions of the Mikoshi (portable shrines) used in the festival are taken verbatim from the Wikipedia page.
Mikoshi
At the Kanamara Festival, three portable shrines, "Kanamara Mikoshi," "Kanayama Boat Mikoshi," and "Elizabeth Mikoshi," are patrolled.
Kanamara Mikoshi
A portable shrine with a square base and a roof. A wooden phallus is housed inside. The oldest of the three portable shrines.
Kanamara Boat Mikoshi
A portable shrine with a boat-shaped base and a roof. Inside, a glowing black iron phallus is housed upwards. It was donated by Hitachi Zosen.
Elizabeth Mikoshi
A portable shrine with a huge pink dildo on the base. There is no roof. This portable shrine was donated by the crossdressing club (女装クラブ) "Elizabeth Kaikan" in Asakusabashi. The other two portable shrines are mainly carried by local parishioners, while the bearers are mainly women, who chant "Kanamara". In 2016 this shrine switched to being displayed on a wheeled trolley.[10] In 2017, the cruising on the road was revived,[11] but it was a one-way trip to Daishi Park, and after being covered with a white cloth in the park, it was pushed back to the shrine.
