There are four Sugiyama Jinja described on my website and I visited this one to add to the collection. Relatively little is known about it. When it was founded is unclear, but in the Edo Period it was situated in the grounds of a Buddhist temple and was regarded as the tutelary jinja for the then Wada Village. In 1873 it was given Village Shrine ranking.

It is mentioned in the Shinpen-Musashi-Fudo-Kiko, which tells us that it was located to the  west of Wada Village, was regarded as the local tutelary jinja and that nothing is known about its construction.   We are also told that the hall of worship is 3 sq.ken (間, a measure of length roughly equivalent to the long side of a tatami mat, about 1.8 metres), faces east, and that the deity is a 15 cm high seated statue of  Honchi Fudo.
