There is very little information available on this small Izanagi Jinja. It is said to have been founded a long time ago, perhaps even in ancient times, as shell mounds and the remnants of prehistoric dwelling places have been found in the area of the shrine. It is possible that the shrine itself may have been in existence then. That said, it is the Edo Period before it is mentioned anywhere: in records from the Shimosa Kokubun-ji Temple and in a plaque from the shrine’s prayer hall. The current shrine was constructed in 1936, and its present main claim to fame may be the (“harigiri”針桐) prickly castor oil tree in its grounds, which has been designated a municipal natural monument by Chiba Prefecture.
