This Akiba Jinja’s origin is said to have been in the Genryoku Period (1688-1704), when a certain Nakashigi Uemon (中茂右衛門) from the Chichibu area was returning from a pilgrimage to Ise Jingu. While visiting Akibasan DaiGongen in Shuchi District (周智郡) in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture he was so humbled by the majesty of the Kami that he successfully petitioned to have it enshrined in Chichibu through the kanjō process. Since then it has been worshipped as the Kami of fire prevention.
Built during the Ansei Period (1854~1860), the shrine’s main hall was destroyed by Typhoon Vera (伊勢湾台風) in 1959 but was rebuilt almost immediately thanks to support from its parishioners. In 1985 the shrine office was built. The shrine’s affairs are managed by Chichibu Jinja.
