History

This Hikawa Jinja is one of the 11 kenmusha under the auspices of Minamisawa Hikari JInja. It probably dates to around the mid-17th century when the village of Monzen began to develop. The shrine was on the north side of the village, where it stood alongside another shrine, Kanayama-sha (金山社).  By the 1870’s this location had become quite inconvenient and in 1878 the shrine was moved closer to the centre of the village, where it stood to the left of the Monzen Inari Jinja, then, as now, located at Higashikurume-shi, Honchō 16. In 1911 it was moved to its present location.  At that time the main hall, the original of which may date to 1811, was facing south with the sandō and  torii in front of it, but by the time it was rebuilt in 1971 the road in front of the shrine had become quite busy  and the shrine's orientation was changed to the east in order to at least partly avoid the urban hustle and bustle.  The sandō and  torii were repositioned accordingly.

Description

About 1.2km from Higashikurume Station. By most standards this is a fairly modest shrine, but it does have one interesting feature, that its six in-ground shrines consist of stone carvings behind the main hall.  Three of them--Hiroyamarei Kami, Isshinrei Kami, Hitoyamarei Kami--share one stone, while the other three enjoy the luxury of their own stones.  There are some other items too, including a Daruma doll peering out from behind a protective screen of branches.
